Pizza in Alexandria

Finally we made it up to the DC area!!  Tyler and I had planned out a little road trip..stopping by the US Marine Corp Museum in Quantico (super cool) and ending up in Alexandria.  We stayed in the Hilton at Marks Center, and it was beautiful.  The front desk lady asked us which floor we wanted to stay on, and we choose the highest....the 30th floor!!  We were also pleasantly surprised with the fact that we got our own private rooftop balcony overlooking DC.  Amazing room and amazing view, we were happy campers.

Old Town Alexandria

After we had checked into the hotel and were feeling EXTREMELY hungry, we ventured into town.  Alexandria is hands down one of the most beautiful cities in America.  Tyler and I loved walking around that town.  We ended up finding a pizza place called RedRocks Pizza that looked very welcoming.  Not only was it welcoming with a nice atmosphere, but they had a pizza option with no cheese! (100% vegan).  So naturally I had that one, and added mushrooms, and olives.  Ty had a "confit" which consisted of eggplant, olives, goats cheese and oregano.  Both were amazing, and accompanied with a ginger ale and iced tea (:   Not only was this a great date place, but a great experience and a tummy filler!

Whole foods? Slow foods

Ok, so this is going to be a really short post, but I just have to rant a little about the terrible service that we had yesterday.  Both of us, being health nuts, wanted to go to Whole Foods in Virginia Beach for lunch.  The little cafe (The Porch) looked green and hip, so we got a good feel at first.  Also it was packed, all the tables were taken, so we knew it would be amazing food.  Tyler ordered a Southwest Spring Vegetable sandwhich with sweet potato fries, and I ordered a veggie burger with grilled mushrooms and onions and a side salad.    The food was good, the veggie burger was by far the best I had ever tasted, but it took over an hour for the food to come out.  And this restaurant was supposed to have semi-fast food since it was a cafe....I would never recommend anyone to try this place because of the ultra slow service.  In addition, the waitress/cashier/bartender was crap.  She wasn't very attentive and it took her 20 minutes of us standing at the desk before she finally saw us and took our order.  Never go to this cafe. ever...

A day in Norfolk

On Sunday we had a fun packed and super busy day planned in Norfolk, Virginia.  Since I LOVE animals and am hoping to work in conservation, we HAD to go to the zoo.  This zoo was actually a lot prettier and bigger than I had imagined.  There were animals from all over the world to see.  I especially liked the tiger and rhino's.  Although we didn't get a great look at the rhino, we still saw him soaking up the sun.  Tyler and I also had to take a selfie with a few of the goats.  They were so placid and happy being showered with affection.  I know that Ty would love to have one as a pet(:

Next stop in Norfolk was the Naval history museum.  But, first we were starving after walking around the zoo so we stopped by a restaurant called the 219 Bistro, on Granby street in downtown Norfolk.  It was pretty fancy, actually a lot fancier than I had expected and wanted, but thats alright.  Since Ty loves his breakfast food and that was an option here, he decided to get the Crab Benedict!!  It consisted of poached eggs, crab, english muffins, hollandaise sauce and some fries...I happily ate those fries (:  I on the other hand had something a lot lighter, a salad topped with grapes, oranges and a yummy dressing.
After the lunch, we went to the USS Wisconsin in the Naval museum.  The ship was huge, but not as old fashioned as the ships we saw in Portsmouth last summer!  It was cool getting to see the ships decks, but we...especially Tyler...really wanted to see the inside of the ship.  In addition it was super hot and humid, so we both needed an escape.  After searching and searching we finally found a way into the inside of the ship and got to see the sleeping quarters of the sailors.  This was a very fun and TIRING day, but well worth it!

Thai in Virginia

Virginia Aquarium
Finally we were reunited again!! Tyler is currently stationed in Virginia, so I just had to come visit him this summer!!  Im here for 9 days so we have a lot of time to explore both the scenery, attractions and FOOD!  The first day we got up bright and early and headed to the Virginia aquarium.  There were plenty of animals to see (:  We especially liked the sharks and turtles.  After the aquarium we headed out for lunch and found this place called Arroy Thai. It looked like crap from the outside but inside the decor was nice.

Hannahs salad and peanut sauce
Tyler and his Tom Yum
Tyler ordered his Pad Thai as usual...it was actually really good and the portion size was big too!  It also came with an appetizer of Tom Yum soup, which also did not fail in a taste test.  I on the other hand had a curry.  It was a little bit to spicy, even with the rice.  At 2 stars it was a scorcher!  My appetizer was a salad, and the sauce that accompanied it was PEANUT SAUCE!  So, in conclusion, this thai restaurant was cheap, quick service, big portions but sketch from the outside.
Curry

Pad Thai (egg-free)
The next day guess what...we had thai food again for lunch!! For the second day in a row.  This time we went to a Thai place that looked a little nicer from the outside.  It was called Tida thai.
Tyler ordered a thai iced tea and it came out presented beautifully with a decorative rose shaped straw cover.  The drink was good too (:  This time Tyler and I decided to order different dishes, and stayed away from the curry and pad thai.  So he had a siracha dish, that had chestnuts, bean sprouts and lots of veggies.  I also had a signature dish, a "healthy ginger", even though it definitely wasn't that healthy due to the fact that it was drowning in rich sauce.    Mine had veggies, ginger and mushrooms.  I love mushrooms and these gave the dish a perfect flare!  Also we got some salads as appetizers.  These salads were unique because the lettuce was ice cold, a nice difference from the hot, and humid outdoors!

Later that same day we went to the beach.  The atlantic ocean is much different from the pacific.  We both think its a lot warmer and nicer than the ocean back home.  But, its nice for both of us to relax and get to enjoy the sun and warmth (:

Had to have a little cigar and grapeade to accompany our beach adventure

Post from the time machine

Usually we try to post food and pics soon after they happen, unfortunately some of the posts get overlooked and neglected for some time.  So here I am making up some old posts from the past!  They coincide with some previous posts and should have been added there..but nonetheless here they are!
So I took that trip to SLO to see Hannah earlier this year, and left behind a few relics!  One of my favorite places we went to was the Big Sky Cafe; a town favorite here and by far one of the best and most unique breakfasts I've ever had!  We both ordered a less conventional (and vegan!) breakfast dish
The interior
As seen below, Hannah's breakfast (my favorite of our two) was a vegetarian lentil stew which contained middle eastern zhoug, kind of like a condiment relish which has a pesto-like consistency. The broth of the dish had a marvelous flavor due to the obviously liberal amounts of red wine used in cooking, absolutely wonderful!  The white cubes in it are also egg replacement to make vegan, however they did not steal from the dish's flavor, just added a rich and absorbent texture to the mix.
Lentil stew with "zhoug"
I had a similar dish, with different fixings inside.  I had a traditional New Mexico pozole, which although had a similar texture and make up of Hannah's, had a vastly different flavor, consisting of more Mexican influenced ingredients.  Hominy, peppers, tomatillos, pumpkin seeds, cumin and cilantro also with egg replacement.  A more spicy and southwest flavor here :) the tomatillos make a fine base of flavors on this one, and the spices really made the flavor jump out at you.  Both of our dishes were very filling and by the time we were done with them we could barely touch our lovely potatoes which come as a side to the whole thing!
New Mexican Pozole
We usually try to keep a food budget, food being a huge worldly expense these days!  But we don't fail to go fancy every once and a while, and given that we don't see each other incredibly often these days, it's high time to go pamper ourselves, the culinary way.  We went to Luna Red, which is a well known and popular tapas restaurant in SLO.
We decided to split a few good looking tapas dishes.  The first we got was a spanish flatbread (pizza like) with avocado pesto (!),summer squash, arugula and roasted garlic.  A great flavor all put together!
Black bean balls and quinoa burger
These next two (the one here on the left being my personal favorite) were a black bean ball thing, and a veggie quinoa burger (all vegan might i add!).  The black bean balls were marvelous!  What you see bedded underneath is an avocado and lime sauce, which i dipped pretty much everything else in after they were gone.  The spiced flavor of the balls themselves were great, accented by their own paprika salt mix.  The arugula burger was also a great choice made by the two of us.  I always love it when a place can make something as classic and well known as a burger taste so dang good as a vegan alternative.  The patty was soft yet firm and kept some of the similar spice characteristics of the black bean balls, and the sauce we chose to put on it was a vegan chipotle, which tied all the burger contents together splendidly :)
In the University district
After reporting from Twentynine Palms (so long you rotten abode...) to my new duty station in Southern Virginia (beautiful!), I was given a few days to go home to Seattle and move over my car and other belongings to my new state (4 long days of driving).  During this time Hannah and I took it upon ourselves to explore a little more what we used to and some new places that we haven't been to together.
Vegan quiche
We had brunch at a place called Chaco Canyon, which is an all vegan cafe located a few blocks up from the main drag of the University District in Seattle.  I was so surprised at first that her and I hadn't been here before, both being vegans at least at some point and taking a high interest in places like this.  We gave it a shot (together at least, Hannah had been here a few weeks prior to my arrival for the first time), and were far far far from disappointed!  I got a vegan quiche as you can see above, which was surrounded by a beautiful array of mixed fresh veggies!  The quiche itself could have passed itself off as not vegan, the flavor was immaculate and had a potato like consistency on the filling made up of spinach and sweet potatoes.  very hot and delicious!  And what better than a home brewed kombucha to wash it down?
Peanut rice bowl
What Hannah ordered I can say was equally good, as both great dishes were.  She had a rice bowl with a strong PEANUT theme; a flavor that Hannah and I have fallen quite deeply in love with after making a homemade peanut sauce a while back which stunned our senses.  Her bowl was great and made good use of a combination of flavors and texture from the cabbage, mixed rice (fluffy!) onion, and of course peanuts and a rich peanut sauce. The only thing we would change about it is the level of spice, it was pretty dang spicy!  And it was very nice and filling regardless!  Hannah had to let me take a big bunch of it which I accepted instantly.

That's all for now!  Next time we will be tuning in from DC, Philadelphia, and Virginia!

Theos Chocolate Tour

Last night right before I was about to go to bed my mom asked me if I wanted to go to the Theo Chocolate Factory tour tomorrow.  How could I say no to CHOCOLATE!!  So the next day we headed down to North Seattle, and ended up at Theo's.  As soon as we got out of the car we were overwhelmed with the sweet, chocolatey smell coming from the window of the factory.

We arrived at the tour ready to learn all about chocolate...and try some on the way (:  Our tour guide was great and let us know where all the cocoa beans come from (south america and africa) and the process of making chocolate.  Getting to try EVERY KIND of Theo's chocolate was definitely the best part.  The dark chocolate is amazing, but I think my favorite kind was the ginger chocolate bar.  The tour was only $10 and now I know my facts about chocolate making and got a free limited edition chocolate bar too!!  Well worth it (:

Me and my free chocolate
After we had our fun at Theos, my mom had a coupon for some sausages at Uli's in Pike Place, so we headed down there.  Both of us had also heard about Rachels Ginger Beer at Pike Place, so we decided to go grab a drink.  I had the blueberry ginger beer, and my mom tried the Moscow Mule (ginger beer and vodka).  They were both super, super strong, but well worth it.  We had a great mother daughter day, and got to try some amazing chocolate and ginger beer!

4th of July and Eating Cheap at Pike Place

Okay, so Tyler wasn't here for the fourth of July unfortunately, but it doesn't mean that I don't get to do some food experimentation...So, for the 4th, I put my skills to a test and decided to make a red white and blue cake!  I made different colored layers and put them together to make a masterpiece!  I lie, maybe it wasn't all that great (the blue looked really green), but it tasted great and was 100% vegan!! I even bought it to our friends house and they couldn't even tell it was a vegan, natural creation(: props to me!

A little later, around the beginning of July, Ty came home for a few days.  He had to take leave so that he could bring his car back to Virginia with him, but we made the most of those days.  The day before he left we decided to go to one of our favorite places in Seattle, Pike Place Public Market.  We tend to go to Pike Place every summer and winter, and it is ALWAYS beautiful.

So, me being a broke college student, and Tyler, a man who wants to save his money, we decided to try to get as much food/variety for our money.  This being said, we scavenged the market trying to find some cheap bites that would excite our tastebuds.  First we found a small greek-ish place  near the entrance.  We got a small baklava for about $1.75. It was delicious but messy!! Then we decided to get some dolmathes from the same place ($3).  These things were super super yummy-grapeleaves rapped around rice and drenched with olive oil.

Happily reunited

Next we tried some Hom Bow ($1.75) from another little food stand along the main drag of Pike Place.  I had never tired this food before, but now I can say that I have.  I wasn't a huge fan, it wasn't as hot as I thought it would be, and it was lacking taste.  In addition, we ordered the vegetable Hom Bow, and it tasted really sweet and syrupy...definitely not good for us at all...
So our last stop on our adventure was to a chocolate shop.  We got some chocolate dipped goodies (an Oreo and a pretzel)  these also came to about $3, and was a great way to finish up a day.  Every day is an adventure for us (: Stay tuned, I have just booked my ticket to Virginia to see Tyler, so there will be plenty of new adventure there too!
